Book One — Treatment

Status: PROVISIONALREVISION REQUIRED. The spine and motifs are set; the beat-by-beat plot is still being placed.

The working narrative treatment for Book One. This is where the foundation architecture meets the canon to become a plot.

Logline OPEN

(A single tight paragraph is still being written — see Open Questions.) Working sense: a man who believes judgment belongs closest to consequence is given a squadron to prove it, and is tested by a war, a loss, and a calculating system that is sometimes right — until the person the world once couldn't classify decides what belongs.

Thematic question

What do we owe the people beside us — and who gets to decide who is worth recovering? (See Themes.)

The spine

The bond between Greg and Markus is the emotional center. The Frontier War, Continuity, and the White Ship are all pressure on it.

Protagonist engine

  • Want CANON: operational autonomy.
  • Need PROVISIONAL: to learn the limits and costs of conviction — when being closest to the problem is not enough.
  • Opposition: Continuity's calculation, given a human face by Veyr.

The Active Counter as structural beats CANON

The counter is the book's emotional metronome:

Beat State Story function
Establish SQUADRON // 4 ACTIVE The unit is forged; the counter is taught to matter.
Loss → 3 ACTIVE Markus is lost; a White Ship encounter that does not save him. The low.
Return → 4 ACTIVE Rafa brings Markus home.
Finale → 5 ACTIVE SQUADRON opens the path; the White Ship joins; Markus classifies the unknown as FRIENDLY.

Three-act mapping PROVISIONAL

  • Act I (~25%) — Establish the squadron, the bond, Greg's conviction, and URRD. Inciting incident and point-of-no-return: OPEN. End on 4 ACTIVE earned.
  • Act II (~50%) — The Frontier War escalates; the argument with Continuity sharpens; the unit is tested. Midpoint and all-is-lost land on Markus's loss and the failed White Ship rescue (→ 3 ACTIVE). The bond fractures.
  • Act III (~25%) — Return (→ 4 ACTIVE) and the finale (→ 5 ACTIVE). Greg's conviction is resolved — held, broken, or transformed: OPEN.

Recovery motif (silent) CANON

Written-off robot → Adam brings it home. Markus unrecoverable → Rafa brings him home. SQUADRON unrecoverable → someone comes back. Never stated to the reader.

Status of this treatment

Marked Revision Required on the homepage dashboard because the beat-by-beat plot, the inciting incident, and the logline are not yet placed. The scaffolding is here; the chapter cards will hold the beats once the acts are fixed.

Next narrative task

Lock the logline + thematic question, then place the Act I inciting incident and first plot point. See recommended build order.
