Markus Origin

Status: CANON (core), with one provisional detail (the M.A.R.K.U.S. expansion)

The full account of how a written-off machine became Markus. This is the seed of the recovery motif and the anchor of Markus's personhood.

The facility and the write-off CANON

Adam, Greg's father, works at a major industrial/logistics facility supporting the colony. The facility uses small utility robots for work in spaces inconvenient for adult humans or larger machinery — deliberately short and compact machines.

One unit is damaged and economically written off. Its proprietary company/manufacturer software is wiped before it can leave the facility. Adam casually asks a coworker what will happen to it. The coworker effectively says:

"You want it? Take it. Just wipe it before it leaves."

Bringing it home CANON

Adam brings the damaged unit home because he finds the compact machine amusing and thinks Greg will enjoy it. It is light enough to carry by a built-in handle on its rear frame.

Greg reacts almost like a child whose father brought home a puppy — immediate fascination. He wants it working. But the machine has hardware and no meaningful operating personality after the proprietary wipe.

The substrate: M.A.R.K.U.S. CANON

Adam searches his workshop and finds an old software package he had saved: M.A.R.K.U.S.

Provisional expansion PROVISIONAL: Modular Adaptive Runtime Kernel for Utility Systems.

M.A.R.K.U.S. is old, modular, unusually powerful, flexible, resource-heavy, inconvenient, originally used for mundane utility/appliance purposes, and never widely adopted because lighter systems were more practical.

It is not secretly sentient

M.A.R.K.U.S. is a substrate, not a hidden soul. Adam adapts it to the damaged robot; the system activates; the framework identifies itself as M.A.R.K.U.S. Greg hears Markus. The technical designation becomes a name.

Growth over years CANON

  • Adam repairs hardware.
  • Greg interacts with Markus constantly, adds and modifies systems.
  • Markus accumulates persistent experiences.
  • Others contribute hardware — the young man at the House on the Hill later improves Markus's legs, balance geometry, and servos.
  • Markus physically grows alongside Greg through progressively taller, more capable bodies.
  • Eventually, Markus begins modifying the M.A.R.K.U.S. architecture itself.

That last step is the threshold of self-authorship.

Conceptual lineage

Adam recovered the machine. M.A.R.K.U.S. gave it a framework. Greg gave Markus a life. Other people helped him move through the world. Eventually Markus began authoring himself.

Do not mystify

There is no single confirmed instant where Markus "became alive." This is not a mystical consciousness event and not an AI-wants-to-be-human story.
