Markus¶

[CANON] Digital-born synthetic person.
[CANON] Originated from a damaged, economically written-off compact industrial utility robot.
[CANON] Original proprietary manufacturer software was wiped before the hardware left the facility.
[CANON] Adam installed a saved legacy runtime, M.A.R.K.U.S., onto the hardware.
[CANON] The framework identified itself as M.A.R.K.U.S.; Greg heard "Markus"; the designation became a name.
[CANON] Greg grew up alongside Markus; Markus accumulated persistent experience over years.
[CANON] Markus physically grew through progressively taller, more capable bodies.
[CANON] Markus eventually began modifying the M.A.R.K.U.S. architecture itself — the threshold of self-authorship.
[CANON] Markus is self-authored: he owns his cognition, memory, and identity.
[CANON] Markus does not aspire to become human.
[CANON] There is no single confirmed instant where Markus "became alive."

[CANON] As a child (tween-aged, ~10–12 in the childhood material): curious, earnest, gentle, socially inexperienced, awkward, unaware of where he doesn't belong. Not cynical, not profane, not deliberately rebellious.
[CANON] Fascinated by technology, people, and environments beyond his ordinary life.
[CANON] Book One want: operational autonomy — give capable people the objective and enough information, and let those closest to the problem decide how to solve it.
[PROVISIONAL] URRD gives Greg the opportunity to prove this philosophy; his arc tests whether instinct and conviction are enough.

[CANON] Greg's father. Works at a major industrial/logistics facility supporting the colony.
[CANON] Brought the damaged utility robot home; found and adapted the legacy M.A.R.K.U.S. package to it.

[CANON] Gracious; treats Greg and Markus naturally. Technically gifted, mechanically intuitive.

[PROVISIONAL] When the squadron loses Relay connectivity, Kristina disappears from their communications — making Relay failure emotionally tangible.

[PROVISIONAL] The Devastation War and the Frontier War are separate conflicts. Devastation came first and ended in an unstable/exhausted armistice; the Frontier War comes years later and is Book One's primary conflict. (→ CANON once chronology is finalized.)
[REJECTED] The present conflict and the Devastation War being the same war.

[PROVISIONAL] A survival-outcome calculation system, developed after and because of Devastation, to reduce dependence on exhausted, biased, panicked human judgment.
[CANON] Continuity did not cause Devastation Day.
[REJECTED] Continuity as "evil AI." It can be correct; it genuinely saves lives; it is not equivalent to Markus.

[CANON] Its true nature is OPEN by authorial rule — it is not to be solved.
[CANON] It predates the older man; appears in historical pilot folklore; appears around unrecoverable situations; physically affects reality; does not reliably rescue everyone.
[CANON] It does not save Markus during his catastrophic loss.
[REJECTED] Conclusively: his ghost · digital data · another AI · divine · alien technology.
[PROVISIONAL] Eventually behaves in ways associated with the older man (but is not merely him).
[PROVISIONAL] Finale: SQUADRON opens the path; the White Ship joins them. Markus classifies the unknown contact as FRIENDLY → SQUADRON // 5 ACTIVE.

[CANON] Far-future human colony world, broadly Earth-like/habitable, settled long enough to be home.
[CANON] Greg's region is rural/agricultural (farmland, streams, bicycles, tight community) yet unmistakably far-future (orbital traffic, advanced automation, synthetic workers, interplanetary logistics).
[OPEN] Planet name.

[CANON] Recovery motif (structural, never stated to the reader): something declared not worth recovering is recovered anyway. Robot written off → Adam brings it home. Markus classified unrecoverable → Rafa brings him home. SQUADRON unrecoverable → someone comes back.
[CANON] The Active Counter (4 → 3 → 4 → 5) carries accumulating emotional meaning.
