Markus¶
Role: lead, POV · Status: CANON (core), with provisional rank detail
Snapshot¶
A digital-born synthetic person — self-authored, self-owned. He grew up alongside Greg, from a written-off machine into a member of the squadron who chooses his loyalty. He does not aspire to become human.
Origin CANON¶
- Originated from a damaged, economically written-off compact industrial utility robot (see Markus Origin).
- Its proprietary manufacturer software was wiped before the hardware left the facility.
- Adam installed a saved legacy runtime package, M.A.R.K.U.S., onto the hardware.
- The framework identified itself as M.A.R.K.U.S.; Greg heard Markus; the technical designation became a name.
M.A.R.K.U.S. PROVISIONAL expansion: Modular Adaptive Runtime Kernel for Utility Systems — old, modular, unusually powerful, flexible, resource-heavy, originally for mundane utility purposes. It is not secretly sentient. It is a substrate.
Growth and self-authorship CANON¶
Over years: Adam repaired hardware; Greg interacted constantly and modified systems; others contributed hardware (the young man at the House on the Hill improved his legs, balance geometry, and servos). Markus accumulated persistent experience and grew through progressively taller, more capable bodies.
Eventually Markus began modifying the M.A.R.K.U.S. architecture itself — the threshold of self-authorship. He owns his cognition, memory, and identity.
Handling rule
There is no single confirmed instant where Markus "became alive." This is not an AI-wants-to-be-human story and not a mystical consciousness event. Conceptual lineage: Adam recovered the machine · M.A.R.K.U.S. gave it a framework · Greg gave it a life · others helped it move through the world · eventually Markus authored himself.
Childhood characterization CANON¶
Young Markus is not mischievous. He does not encourage stealing, crime, rule- breaking, delinquency, or reckless behavior. He is curious and capable of disagreement, but he trusts Greg enormously and follows him because Greg is his social anchor. That excessive trust later contributes to serious trouble in adolescence when Greg begins challenging rules. He does not yet speak like his adult self; his behavioral sophistication develops over time.
In the squadron¶
- Rank PROVISIONAL: may be substantially higher than Greg's, possibly First Commander.
- Command choice PROVISIONAL: inside SQUADRON combat operations he voluntarily accepts Greg's tactical leadership. Nobody assigns his loyalty; he chooses it.
The loss and return CANON / PROVISIONAL¶
- Markus is lost (
SQUADRON // 4 ACTIVE→3 ACTIVE). A substantial White Ship encounter occurs around his catastrophic loss — and it does not save him. - Months later he returns (
3 ACTIVE→4 ACTIVE); Rafa brings him home. - In the finale he is the one who classifies the unknown contact as FRIENDLY
(
→ 5 ACTIVE). (The thematic weight of this is never explained in prose.)
Key relationships¶
- Greg — the spine. Adam — recovered and repaired him.
- The Older Man — improved his physical hardware.
- Rafa — brings him home from unrecoverable.
