Over years of accumulated experience, hardware growth, and constant interaction with Greg, Markus crossed from running the M.A.R.K.U.S. substrate to rewriting it. He owns his cognition, memory, and identity.

No single instant

There is no confirmed moment where Markus 'became alive.' Self-authorship is a process, not an event, and M.A.R.K.U.S. was never secretly sentient. See Narrative Rules.
