Do not solve it

Do not identify its true nature. There is no hidden answer waiting to be revealed — not even in author-only material. Its power comes from remaining unclassifiable.

Established behavior CANON

  • Predates the older man.
  • Appears in historical pilot folklore.
  • Appears around unrecoverable situations.
  • Physically affects reality — it is not a hallucination or a story.
  • Cannot be cleanly classified.
  • Occasionally appears to help.
  • Does not reliably rescue everyone.

What it is not REJECTED

It is not conclusively any of these:

  • merely the older man's ghost
  • digital data
  • another AI
  • divine
  • alien technology

Eventually it behaves in ways associated with the older man PROVISIONAL — but it is not merely him.

The Markus loss encounter CANON

There is a substantial White Ship encounter around Markus's catastrophic loss.

Critical: it does not save Markus. This is deliberate — it prevents the phenomenon from becoming an automatic guardian angel. (Markus is instead brought home later by Rafa.)

The finale PROVISIONAL

  • The finale involves SQUADRON opening the path. The White Ship joins them.
  • Greg does not simply follow a dead mentor home.
  • System initially detects UNKNOWN CONTACT. Markus cannot explain it. Markus deliberately classifies it FRIENDLY. Eventually: SQUADRON // 5 ACTIVE.

Thematic weight (do not state in prose)

The synthetic person humanity once struggled to classify becomes the one willing to classify the unclassifiable presence as belonging. Never explain this connection to the reader.
